Reality check

Never having watched American Idol much before until they had gotten to the finals, I must say that the beginning is very disappointing. I had heard people talk about how they showcase a lot of bad singers who are usually oblivious to their, how shall we say, lack of singing talent, but I had no idea that a 2 hour show is about 1 hr and 15 min of bad singing &/or talking about the bad singing, 15 minutes of really good quality singing &/or talking about the good singing, and a half hour of commercials – which I skip.

We have friends who sing who mentioned that they don’t watch it until it gets down to 12 people. I am starting to realize the wisdom of this policy. And I may take up that method for watching the show very shortly.

I can’t help it…I love watching the cringe-worthy singers, especially the ones who get so mad at the judges (especially Simon) for telling them the truth. It makes me giggle.

I usually only watch 10-15min of the audition shows. I can’t handle much more. Although it is interesting to see what some people think of their own singing versus what others think. Once they narrow it down to the next round, it will probably be much more enjoyable for you.

I personally like watching the cringing singers because they make me giggle and remind me of some people who I knew that were rather oblivious to their tone-deafness. I think half the people that show up have had people telling them all of their life that they are good, so they won’t be offending, and they get to reality and the judges tell a rather unbiased criticization. It’s so funny. I bet most of those bad people have never sang a capella, and only sing to pop music with headphones on.

And then there are the people like me, who they usually don’t show, that have good pitch, tone, and completely understand music theory, but don’t have an angelic voice or the lungs to push it.

    Ahh..big tangent.

Anyway, I would say that you will most likely enjoy the second round, after the primary auditions. The one with the singing and dancing with groups. It’s really good to watch. Just like Texas Seestor said. :)

I’m one of the few in America who has never watched the show. I don’t think I could stand to listen to the lousy singers. I’m really picky about singers as it is.
