Flowers for Friday – purple water lilies
and in large
These were a couple of the amazing water lilies we saw in the ponds outside of Como Park Conservatory. There were some huge water lily plants with lily pads of over 1 foot in diameter and growing 6-8 feet (or more) in diameter. They looked like you’d be able to walk on them, they were so large.
But of course it was the flowers that really drew my eye. So many pretty flowers. The day was cloudy, so the lighting in this photo is subdued due to the clouds. Although you know what happened? The sun came out, so I rushed over and took a photo or two of the same two flowers. And…
… and I don’t like those pictures as well. The light seems glaring. The shadows seem harsh. It is amazing what a little diffused light can do.
So my photography lesson for the day? Just keep taking pictures. In various light conditions, if possible. Because you never know which combination is going to turn out to be just right.

Very pretty! I have a new desktop photo.

Thanks for the pretty picture, Danielle. I imagine that with more light you wouldn’t get the cool details of the water below. Diffused light is cool.

Danielle! (Danie)
Hey! I’ve kept this sit bookmarked since you launched it way back when. Whenever I’m missing a bit of all of you I stop in and read a few entries. I LOVE it and it always makes me smile. Thanks for all the joy!

Thanks for the smile.

GORGEOUS!!
The color in this is fantastic. Really.
Diffused light is the bomb. In art school they used to recommend that we photograph our work outside on a cloudy day for the best most even light, with the leats amount of glare or over reflected light.
I also like taking pictures at dawn and dusk (and on bright and dark cloudy days) because colors are deeper, you can see things more than the shadows they throw.
