Green glass
I was reminded of this photo by Amber’s picture of the light shining through the blue plastic half of a piggy bank.
Part of what I liked about this image was that we’d only recently received our new furniture, and HB had cozied up on one of the chairs with a bottle of Tennents. When I turned to say something to him, I realized how the light was shining through the bottle and creating a really crisp shadow of a bottle on the arm of the chair, but that it was curved, and that part of the shadow was green. I guess it is still a shadow… although maybe the part where the light created horizontal cross beams of lighter green light would be considered a refraction of light or something scientific-sounding like that. Physics was never my strong suit, but that wikipedia description looks right for refraction.
I guess my point to this post is that I’ve always really loved stained glass and colored glass in general. There is this really amazing set of stained glass windows in a chapel in a city north of Chicago. I have film photos of some of the windows, but the next time I am in the area, I’m going to make a point of photographing those windows with Dee-Dee’s assistance.
HA! I just realized today is ground-hog’s day! How fitting that I have a post about a shadow.

I love the way the sun shining through colored glass makes “colored” shadows.
I was walking through the parking lot after work one day before Christmas, carrying a plate of goodies (a gift from my boss) wrapped in red cellophane. When I looked down, I could see the red cellophane in my shadow! It was like…there was my shadow, all black and shadowy and following me, but then this patch of red moving with it! (I don’t think these sentences make sense. I’m having a hard time finding the words I need to try to describe this, but maybe you get the gist of it, anyway.) It was just really neat, and really made me smile. I wanted to run around the parking lot, just to watch the “red shadow” follow me around. (Of course, I didn’t do that, because I was, after all, in the parking lot at WORK, and I would’ve looked completely INSANE.)

That’s beautiful! I was wondering if you would dig up the glass picture you were telling me about. I like the refracted light around the neck of the bottle. It kind of makes it look like it is a magic bottle.
And today is GHD?! So what’s the verdict? Long or short winter? Hmph. I am going to go look. Here’s hoping for some sun.
Coincidence, indeed.
Danielle says:
as opposed to partially insane, which is preferable, eh?
It sounds really pretty, and makes me smile just hearing how happy it made you.
When I see that colored cellophane in the stores, I have to refrain from buying every color that has ever existed. I currently just have the blue type. I also get all geeked up about wrapping paper that is colored cellophane-like. I used to have this roll of blue that was so pretty.
Do you see a pattern yet? Favorite colors, blue, green, purple.
Danielle says:
ooops. you snuck in there Amber.
I’m glad you like it – magical!
I don’t know what the verdict was…. since it is sunny, he probably saw his shadow. But dang if I can remember if that calls for a short winter or a long one. Seems like it would have to be short with the way it has been around here lately.
Amber says:
The little bast…I mean, guy, saw his shadow. 6 more weeks of winter!
*yay*
That was sarcastic, you know.
But you are right, it’s been pretty warm and sunny and not as snowy here in MN. Winter might as well be shortened.

That glass picture is so cool. And I understand what Ladybug is saying, too. I’m attracted to cool colors, especially in cellophane. I’m as bad as a little kid about that.

Neato! As I read this post, I was thinking about it being GroundHog’s Day…how funny.
I love stained glass as well, especially with the sun shining through it.

That is a really cool picture. I’ve always loved colored glass too. When I was a kid, I could spend hours combing the beach for those perfect bits of glass, polished smooth by the waves. There were always mostly brown and clear, but a fair amount of green, and the rare blue piece.

Awesome shot, Danielle!
