The battle against inertia

In my post describing how much I battle getting myself to go exercise, Momo asked me if I would want to be email buddies and check in with each other once a week about how our exercising has gone for the week. Since this was along the same lines as a suggestion Amber made to me via email, we’ve decided to form an exercising club to help keep us motivated.

And, you are invited to join us!

Here’s how it will work. On Sunday, I’ll make a post where we can each comment about how our exercising/activity went for the previous week. You are welcome to put in as much, or as little detail as you want. You are welcome to comment every week or whenever you feel like it, but Momo and Amber and I are committing to commenting every week. I’m thinking that I’m going to commit to listing off each day of the week and what I did or didn’t do that day; I’m still deciding if I want to include the lengths of time. It would be a nice way to see the progress I’m making and might keep me going past the 20 minute mark when I usually feel like stopping. I will probably put in the lengths of time.

Now, this is rather public (although my readership is relatively low) but for Momo and Amber and me, we are going to do it this way. For me, having it be ‘public’ will probably be the added incentive I need to keep at it when I’d rather not. I am one of these people who can stick with an exercising program for a month, but then the minute I get sick or travel or have something happen that makes it the littlest bit inconvenient, I stop. And once I stop, it is REALLY hard for me to get back at it again. So, I’m hoping this will
A) get me going again when I stop due to say illness/migraines and
B) will keep me going when it isn’t convenient

If you want to participate, but don’t want to do it by a public comment, you can always just email me (danielle at danielleblog dot com) and tell me if you do or don’t want me to forward it to the people participating and we’ll cheer you on via email.

That is really what this is about, having friends to encourage and support you, when the going gets tough, and to be accountable to someone as incentive to go be active when you don’t feel like it.

And maybe along the way, we’ll inspire each other in our battle to become more fit and healthier.

So start tracking your activity for the week and check back on Sunday!

Good for you! Having a support group is a really great way to stick to it. Because we all know how easy it is to fall off the workout wagon. I had been terrible since my wedding, for over 2 years, but I have been exercising regularly since November, and I feel GOOD–better every week! And you can too!

Ern, it is a personal account like this, and those of Kelly and Alex (in the comments of the post before this) that inspire me to believe it really will make a difference in how I feel if I just stick with it long enough.

You give all of us hope and inspiration, thank you for that!

I agree with Danielle, it is always good to here success stories.

I am hoping that this will help me out. I am the kind that can go for a month, but then something comes up and I can never get started again.

I already have plans for tonight. It depends on wether or not Andy wants to go to the house or not. If we stay here, I will go to do the treadmill for a while, but if not, I am going to dance after they go to bed. :D

    Yay!

I’m excited! I hope this will help us all.

So Sunday it is! I will be listing each day off as well, and I plan on saying what I did and for how long.

I hope many will participate, cheer us on, and share success stories of their own.

    Good luck!

Okay, so I guess I’ll put down times too since you (Momo) and Amber are going to.

Amber, I hope you got in your dancing after they’d gone to bed or got to go do the treadmill last night.

I ended up walking outside even though it was getting kinda late and I was thinking I might get rained on. The thing I realized about walking is that if I do a there-and-back sort of route, I can’t exactly stop prematurely. I pretty much _have_ to keep going in order to get home. Talk about incentive…. ;-)

Victoria – as I said in my email, I’m super excited you are joining us!

Momo, I am hoping too. Goodness knows I need to try something different from what I’ve done in the past. And judging from what Amber said about the one month mark being her downfall too, we’ll have to be hyper aware of making it past that point. Just yesterday, it got to be all cloudy and gray in the afternoon (when I normally go walk) and I was disappointed and not wanting to go. But then my Dad asked me if I’d gone yet today, and that got me to go. That and not wanting to put down ‘nothing’ for Monday. I guess it is working already.

And Poopie, all of that remodeling work you are doing counts too! Haven’t you seen Karate Kid? you know, the ‘paint the fence” “wax on” “wax off” ? And stripping wall paper is hard work! I know that when I finally get around to really scrubbing our bathrooms clean, I’m going to count that as exercise. Goodness knows that I work up a sweat doing it.
