HB strikes again!
That clevah smahhht hubby of mine sure did surPRISE me!
He bought my anniversary/graduation present earrrrrrrrrrrrly and it was waiting for me on our bed when we got home from the airport last night!
So, let us all welcome into the family, a precious new member:

My very own Digital SLR – the Nikon D70.
Just in time too, I’ve been seeing the black screen of sickness periodically on our sturdy little Cybershot DSC-P71 lately. Especially over the weekend. Poor baby, I think the battery connections might be a hint weak. We’ll doctor you up in no time, dear thing, and then you can be all HB’s.
I’m still in shock over it his giving it to me.
I knew I wanted a Nikon. My family has always had Nikon cameras and has loved them and loved them more and more. It was just a matter of deciding between the D70 and the D71, which actually wasn’t that hard of a decision when it came down to it. HB and I had talked about this via email a little bit ago… but I was still SO surprised.
The instruction booklet is going to take me a while to work through, and I have (as I said in my comments on my last post) about 2-3 weeks of pictures from my Minneapolis/St. Paul and Indiana trip to post. But I’m sure I’ll be posting some D70 pics soon.
I am the type of person that usually needs a week or more to really get comfortable with the idea of some expensive new toy. I am always so afraid of breaking it or hurting something out of ignorance.
But I bet I’ll get over that really fast.
This morning I’ve been overwhelmed with these kinds of thoughts:
OOOOOOO! and I can take pictures of THAT now.
And THAT would be really cool too.
OH, and this will be a perfect time to get a picture of THIS!
And I’ve always wanted to try to take pictures of THAT, and won’t it be fun to try!
OH! and this means I’ll get in LOTS of practice before Texas Sister and Trainwreck’s wedding (in November).
YIPPEEEEEE!
smooches and smooches and more and more for darling hunny bunny.
I think I’ll give her a name.
Suggestions?
HB says:
When do you get home again?
HB
LadyBug says:
OhOhOhOhOh!!!!
Danielle, I am SOOOOO happy for you!
I mean – this is so silly – I’m so excited right now, you’d think I’D gotten the new camera! I’m just grinning and giddy and using my backspace key WAY too much, ’cause I’m so excited I can’t type straight!
Congratulations on your new addition, hon!
Oh, and I’m thinking maybe “Niki”? Since it’s a Nikon. Not very original, but stays true to the brand name. You’ll probably come up with something better and more personal, though.
P.S. – HB sounds very lonely in his comment above. I hope you’ll get to see him and love him up again very soon.
CONGRATS again!
HUGS,
LadyBug
Danielle says:
HB, perhaps instead of my “usual time” I can come home earrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrly.
Ladybug -It is such a JOY to hear of your exuberance and happiness for me – it makes me grin to hear of you grinning… pretty soon, we’ll be in a neverending circle of happiness.
(which sounds almost dorky, but well, there ya go. Dorks Unite!)
Sorry I haven’t been by lately. I will soon!!
Mother Hen (D's mom) says:
Name for Camera – SPOT
What fun, and what a nice hubby!

HB says:
SPOT! hahaha, I love it!
HB’s new Treo 650 arrived today, so he’s got a new gadget to play with too
Danielle says:
I like Ladybug’s idea of a feminine version of a variation on Nikon D70.
Niki would remind me of someone in my extended family, which makes it feel a tad odd for my camera.
Connie?
(I think spelling it Konnie looks too masculine, for some reason)
DeeDee?
Deelightful?
oooo… DeeDee reminds me of Tweedle Dee…
and then the CyberShot DSC-P71 could be Tweedle Dum.
HA!
I can just hear it
“HB, have you seen Tweedle Dee lately?”
or “Danie, where is Tweedle Dum? Have you seen him around?”
*grinning*
But STILL TAKING suggestions!
Amber says:
Ooooh…how awesome!
I’m so happy for you. Nikons are such good cameras.
As for a name, how about “Chocolat”. Without the “e”
Sorry, in a chocoiate mood.
Momo says:
Congrats! I am thrilled for you. I truly hope you get past the fear of the “expensive new toy” quick … I can’t wait to see the pictures you will take with it.
Truth be told, I have that same fear of breaking or hurting the “expensive new toy” and that is why I don’t use my hubby’s Cannon 10D all that much.
I hope you enjoy it … I know we will!
La Pix says:
I love that LadyBug! I was thinking Niki too before even reading her comment!
And I LOVE that HB for making you so happy. I am thrilled thrilled THRILLED for you – it will be a wonderfu adventure. It’s just fantastic. But I, umm, can’t, by any means, wait 2-3 weeks even to see one tiny little Niki Pik!!!
Please… ?
Danielle says:
Guess what!
With the battery all charged last night and a rudimentary glossing over of the manual, I started trying out different settings and taking pics.
So, now, I just have to get the software installed on my computer so that I can move them from my unnamed dearie (possibly Tweedle Dee) to my computer to my blog.
I can’t say that they are the best possible ones for this subject matter, but it was something that Tweedle Dum would’ve had trouble focusing on for the autofocus. With Tweedle Dum, I would’ve needed to temporarily hold a solid object in front in order to get it to focus at the right plane and then move the solid object away, and then take the pic.
This was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier.
It won’t be much longer….
SeaQueen says:
Congrats! Nice Job, HB!
And I have to say I think Tweedle Dee sounds like a great name (I was also thinking Niki, but now think that a fictional name will give your camera an air of individuality…besides it fits well with Girlie Girl’s off-line identity
You’ll just have to bring your new baby down here to take some pics this weekend
Squirl says:
Oh, congratulations! Everybody who gets that camera just loves it. What a sweetie HB is. Looking forward to the pictures!
greenthumb says:
CONGRATS! LaPix told me about your new arrival. Mine is only about 29 days old now. My man surprised me with it the night before I went to Vegas.
Just so you know, on http://www.flickr.com, there is a group there called Nikon D70 and they have a forum with questions and discussion about the camera. I found it very useful.
Hope you enjoy the D70 as much as I do. It’s my new best friend and it goes everywhere with me.
Amber says:
What’s with people and their man buying them the D70.
I’m totally missing out here.
Time to go *ahem* hint at my man for one.
And I’m totally excited to see the awesome pic you take with the camera. You take great pics NOW..what are they going to look like later??
And, I was driving this morning and I paased a house that I SWORE looked like the one in your pictures. I’m going to email you later.
Danielle says:
SeaQueen, as long as we get our insurance policy updated with it, it’ll be coming with me!
Squirl, yes he is a sweetie. I’m also glad to hear that my ‘regular readers’ don’t mind/enjoy my pictures. Sometimes I feel bad for not writing more…. but honestly, I was originally just going to do a photoblog and then decided to do a combo instead.
Greenthumb, thanks for the Flikr tip! I didn’t realize you’d gotten one too. I don’t think I’ve been by your blog in a while.
Amber, and here I thought your man just bought you a CAR.
No really, I’m glad to hear you are excited to see my pics too. Although part of me wonders if I’ll live up to the expectations.
hmmm… can ya’ll lower your expectations a little bit please? At least until I figure out what the heck I’m doing…
Think of that Shout song, “How low, can you go? How low, can you go?”
*hopeful shy smile*
thanks

Yeah! Welcome to the D70 club!! It IS an intimidating toy! So big and so complicted, but it really is an awesome camera. Good luck learning it!
Ern says:
This D70 thing is spreading like some kind of virus! I can’t wait to see what you do with it!
